Trianz was recently approached by a leading provider of emulsion polymers, specialty chemicals, and functional decorative surfaces. The client needed a partner to conduct a master data governance (MDM) assessment and devise a roadmap for MDM in its SAP enterprise resource planning platform.
The client had implemented SAP around twelve years prior to engaging with Trianz. This system supported all aspects of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) process, alongside an acquired business arm from six years prior.
After the acquisition, the acquired businesses’ SAP instance was not harmonized with the main SAP implementation, creating redundancies and siloed datasets that prevented holistic reporting.
Trianz started by interviewing eighteen different stakeholders across the business to identify departmental requirements, and perform root cause analysis.
Both data systems were then assessed to understand data availability and determine constraints. This gave insight into how Trianz could merge the systems.
Next, business use cases with specific business values were modeled to guide the harmonization process.
A future-state analytical architecture was designed alongside the merging of both SAP instances, enabling new analytics and business intelligence functions across the client’s operations.
A high-level roadmap encompassing all project areas was developed to provide estimates to key business stakeholders.
Finally, a detailed initial project plan was developed and shared to assist with staff capacity planning, timeline estimates, and cost projections.
The client now had a clear roadmap to implement its Master Data Governance framework, alongside a roadmap to implement new analytics infrastructure and services.
Estimates contained within both roadmaps could feed into the client’s planning and budgeting exercises, managing capital expense and monetary risk.
Clear business values were established across both roadmaps in specific areas, giving the green light to stakeholders with a proof of value statement.
A clear methodology towards harmonizing both SAP instances was provided, offering guidance on resources, budgets, and roadmap constraints.
