Talend—Your Unified Data Integration Platform

With businesses collecting massive quantities of information daily, it is crucial to maintain data accessibility for employees. The art of data integration involves combining datasets from different sources to create a unified focal point for analysis and insight generation. This achieves a state of data confluence, which can be beneficial in a variety of use cases including commercial applications and scientific research.

For those who are just starting their data integration journey, it’s challenging to find the right software package for use in the long-term. Large upfront licensing costs can be off-putting to smaller businesses, and the need to maximize value and minimize costs make it hard for IT departments to justify a solution for larger enterprises. This is where Talend steps in.

What Is Talend?

Talend is an open-source platform, specialized in helping businesses with cloud data integration management. Unlike competitors, Talend is split into three separate tiers, including a free open-source tier.

Talend Open Studio

This is the free tier offered by Talend. Through this open-source package, you’ll have access to:

  • Open Studio for Big Data

  • Open Studio for Data Integration

  • Open Studio for Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)

  • Open Studio for Data Quality

  • Stitch Data Loader (up to 5 million inputted database rows per month)

This range of tools offers a great introduction to the world of cloud data integration. With Talend’s Open Studio, you can undergo the development process and figure out whether the software is suited to your business needs—all without any cost to you.

Talend provides a free, open-source Apache license with their Open Studio tier. You should be aware that support is limited with the Open Studio offer, meaning you are reliant on collaboration with the open-source community of volunteer contributors. To receive direct support from Talend, you’ll need to upgrade to one of their paid tiers.

If you find that these open-source tools are useful in helping you achieve your business data management objectives, you may want to consider the upgrade tiers on offer.

Entry-Level and Platform Editions

Talend’s “entry-level” and “platform” tiers offer extra functionality and direct support from their product support team.

Pricing is based on a per-user subscription model, dependent on which services you require. Here are a couple of Talend’s premium offerings:

  • Stitch Data Loader – Talend has created Stitch Data Loader, a tool specialized in streamlining cloud-native data collation for use in analytics, business intelligence, and machine learning workflows. It scales alongside your growing datasets, minimizing the requirement for configuration, deployment management, and database maintenance.

The free tier allows you to input up to 5 million database rows per month. Beyond that, pricing starts at $100 per month for more than 5 million database rows and tops out on their estimation tool at $1250 per month for 300 million database rows. You can start a free 14-day trial to determine whether the tool suits your needs and get custom enterprise plans with tailored integration and service level agreements (SLAs) for datasets exceeding 300 million database rows per month.

  • Talend Data Management Platform – This is an integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) that allows you to get maximum value out of your data and enterprise applications. Talend provides design and productivity tools, offering continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) on your network through its graphical design environment. Automated data standardization and cleansing, along with data masking and encryption, can simplify data quality and governance management. Their cloud-agnostic approach means you can use your preferred cloud provider, with added “connectors” that permit integration with popular Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions.

Licensing is provided through a subscription service, with an inclusive warranty and indemnification in instances of data loss or breach. You can run the software on-premises or in the cloud, making it a viable option for hybrid cloud strategies.
